First time in Kattankudy: what to know before you go
A small, welcoming town on Sri Lanka's east coast with a famous golden mosque, warm hospitality, and an easygoing pace. Here is how to make the most of it.

Where it is and how to arrive
Kattankudy sits just south of Batticaloa on the east coast. From Colombo it is roughly a five to six hour drive, or an overnight train to Batticaloa followed by a short tuktuk. The east is at its sunniest from May to September, the opposite of the island's west and south.
What to see
The golden-domed Masjid Al Aqsa is the town's landmark and the reason many visitors come. Pair it with the heritage museum, the lagoon, and a short trip to the beaches at Kallady and Pasikudah. A day is enough for the highlights; two lets you slow down.
Visiting respectfully
Kattankudy is a conservative Muslim town and visitors of all faiths are warmly welcomed. Dress modestly, especially near mosques: cover shoulders and knees, and carry a scarf if you plan to look inside a prayer hall. The town is alcohol-free. A little courtesy goes a long way and is always returned.
Where to stay
Family-run guesthouses and homestays are the heart of local hospitality, with a few larger options nearby. Booking ahead through a local platform means transparent prices with no hidden fees and a host who can help with tuktuks, food, and directions.
