Meera Jumma Mosque
One of Kattankudy's historic and most-visited mosques
Meera Jumma Mosque is among the oldest and most cherished mosques in Kattankudy, a town known for having one of the highest concentrations of mosques in Sri Lanka. It is a living place of worship at the heart of the community, and a window into the town's deep Islamic heritage. Visitors are welcome to admire the architecture respectfully from outside prayer times.
What to see
The mosque's calm courtyards, detailed plasterwork, and the daily rhythm of prayer give a strong sense of place. Kattankudy's skyline is punctuated by minarets, and this is one of the landmarks locals are proud of. Take time to notice the craftsmanship and the quiet, orderly atmosphere.
Visiting respectfully
This is an active mosque, not a tourist site, so dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees; women may wish to carry a scarf), remove shoes where required, and avoid visiting during the five daily prayer times unless you are joining the congregation. Photography of people praying is discouraged. A friendly word with someone at the entrance goes a long way.
