Three days in Kattankudy: a slow east-coast escape
A relaxed three-day plan that pairs the Grand Mosque and heritage with beaches, the lagoon, and the town's famous food, at an easy pace.

Day one: the town and its landmark
Arrive, settle in, and start with the golden-domed Masjid Al Aqsa, the reason many people come. Walk the surrounding lanes, visit the heritage museum, and eat your way through the bakeries and short-eats counters. Keep the afternoon gentle and end with sweet tea.
Day two: beaches and lagoon
Hire a tuktuk or a van for the day. Head to Kallady and Pasikudah for calm, shallow swimming, then loop back via the Batticaloa lagoon for the late-afternoon light. Pack water and sun cover; shade is limited on the sand.
Day three: markets, mosques, and slow mornings
Catch the early fish market by the shore, then spend a slow morning over breakfast. See the Meera Jumma mosque, pick up sweets to take home, and, if the train suits your onward plans, ride the scenic line out of Batticaloa.
