East-coast beach season

Calm, clear seas and the island's best weather, April to September.

East-coast beach season

When: April to September

While the south and west see rain, Sri Lanka's east coast enjoys its sunniest, calmest months. From April to September the sea off Kattankudy, Kallady, and Pasikudah is flat and clear, perfect for easy swimming and slow beach days.

Where to swim

Pasikudah is famous for its shallow, bath-warm bay; Kallady and Kattankudy beaches are quieter and more local. Mornings and late afternoons are best, both for the light and to avoid the midday heat.

Beyond the sand

Pair the beach with a lagoon boat trip, the Grand Mosque, and the town's food. A van with a driver makes it easy to string the highlights together in a day.

What to pack

Sun cover, water, and modest beachwear in keeping with the local setting. Shade is limited on the sand, so plan around the cooler hours.
