Pasikudah Beach
Shallow, calm turquoise water - one of the east coast's best beaches
Pasikudah, north of Kattankudy and Batticaloa, is one of Sri Lanka's most famous beaches: a wide bay of shallow, calm, turquoise water where you can wade out a long way. It is ideal for families and gentle swimming, and makes an easy, rewarding day trip from a Kattankudy base. The season runs broadly from April to September, in step with the east coast.
Why it is special
The bay is exceptionally shallow and protected, so the water stays calm and warm. It is a relaxed place to swim, paddle, and unwind, with soft sand and a slow pace. Nearby Kalkudah offers a longer, quieter stretch if you want more space.
Making a day of it
Bring water, sun protection, and modest beachwear in keeping with the area. Combine the beach with lunch and a stop in Batticaloa on the way back. Your host can arrange a van or tuktuk for the trip.
Common questions
- Is it good for families and non-swimmers?
- Yes. The bay is shallow and calm for a long way out, which makes it one of the most family-friendly beaches on the coast. Still, keep an eye on children and conditions.
- When is the best time to go?
- The east coast season runs roughly April to September, when seas are calm and skies clear. Mornings and late afternoons are most comfortable.
