Masjid Al Aqsa (Al-Aqsa Grand Jumma Masjith)

Kattankudy's golden-domed landmark, inspired by the Dome of the Rock

The Al-Aqsa Grand Jumma Masjith is Kattankudy's most striking landmark: a gleaming gold-and-white mosque modelled on the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. Inaugurated in December 2022, it draws thousands of worshippers each Friday and curious visitors from across Sri Lanka year-round. It is the single image most people picture when they hear the name Kattankudy.

A landmark that changed the town

Before the mosque opened, few outside the Eastern Province had reason to visit Kattankudy. Its distinctive golden dome changed that almost overnight. Rental buses now arrive from Colombo, Kandy, and across the island, and the mosque has become the anchor of a growing visitor economy of guesthouses, restaurants, and local guides. It is both a working place of worship and a source of pride for one of the most densely populated towns in South Asia.

Visiting respectfully

Visitors of all faiths are welcome, and the community is known for its warmth. Dress modestly: men in long trousers, women covering arms, legs, and hair with a scarf. Remove your shoes before entering the prayer hall and dress areas. Avoid visiting during the five daily prayers if you only want to look around, and never walk in front of someone praying. Photography of the exterior is welcome; ask before photographing people or the interior during prayer.

Getting there

The mosque sits in the heart of Kattankudy, about 4 km south of Batticaloa town. From Batticaloa it is a short tuktuk ride; from Colombo it is roughly a 5.5 to 6 hour drive, or an overnight train to Batticaloa followed by a local tuktuk. Parking is available nearby for buses and cars. Most guesthouses in town are within walking distance or a few minutes by tuktuk.
